Biden’s “Time Is Money” Campaign Targets Ineffective Chatbots
Source: CNBC
The Biden administration unveiled a new campaign this week to hold businesses accountable for wasting consumer time, introducing strict regulations on customer service chatbots. The “Time Is Money” campaign empowers the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to implement rules targeting practices that “add unnecessary headaches and hassles to people’s days and degrade their quality of life.”
A key focus of the campaign is on customer service chatbots. The CFPB will have the authority to take action against businesses that misuse chatbots. Specifically, the government plans to target chatbots that employ AI-generated voices to mislead consumers into thinking they are interacting with a real person.
According to a White House announcement, the CFPB will identify “unlawful” practices and take action against “ineffective and time-wasting chatbots used by banks and other financial institutions in place of genuine customer service.” While acknowledging that chatbots can be useful for answering basic questions, the administration emphasizes that they often fall short when it comes to resolving complex issues and disputes.
The government’s position is clear: technology like chatbots should be used to enhance customer service with quick response times, not as a means to avoid basic responsibilities such as processing refunds. The Biden administration also insists that customers should have easy access to human representatives at convenient times without enduring long wait times.
In addition to chatbots, the campaign addresses other consumer concerns, such as difficult-to-cancel subscription services and new automatic refund rules for airlines to reimburse travelers for canceled flights—an especially timely move following the recent CrowdStrike outage. The public is encouraged to submit ideas for further actions the government can take to tackle these issues.
