Tesla Offers $48/Hour for Motion Capture Data Collection in Humanoid Robot Development

Tesla is offering an enticing $48 an hour to wear a motion-capture suit, collecting crucial data for the development of its humanoid robot, Optimus.

Applicants must be between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall, capable of carrying up to 30 pounds, and able to walk for more than seven hours a day, according to the job listing.

Candidates must also endure wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset for extended periods, which can be disorienting and uncomfortable, potentially causing VR sickness. The position is based in Palo Alto, California.

As a data collection operator for the Tesla Bot, duties include walking predetermined test routes, performing designated movements, analyzing data, and writing daily reports detailing observations and issues. This role is one of over 20 openings related to the Tesla Bot, most of which are in engineering.

This job posting comes as Tesla aims to commercialize the robot, unveiled at the company’s annual AI Day in 2022. It has since been deployed to handle batteries in one of Tesla’s factories, according to the latest earnings report.

In a recent post on X, CEO Elon Musk stated the company would have “genuinely useful humanoid robots” for internal use by 2025 and, “hopefully,” production for other companies by 2026.

Musk is highly optimistic about the robot’s prospects. During an April earnings call, he said a fully commercialized Optimus will be “more valuable than everything else combined” from Tesla’s production line.

“If you’ve got a sentient humanoid robot that can navigate reality and perform tasks on request, there is no meaningful limit to the size of the economy,” Musk said. “So that’s what’s going to happen, and I think Tesla is best positioned of any humanoid robot maker to achieve this.”
