The Rise of Robotic Autonomy: Transforming Data Acquisition

AI Summit London spotlights the Oxford Robotics Institute’s advancements in autonomous robots as key data sources for industries.

Hey there,

The Oxford Robotics Institute, under Nick Hawes’ direction, is advancing the use of autonomous robots in industrial settings, aiming to outperform human data collection. Robots like Spot have been deployed to autonomously gather radiation data, demonstrating the potential for AI-driven autonomy in reaching inaccessible areas and optimizing operations with minimal human input. The Institute’s focus on AI, which constitutes 80% of their work, is revolutionizing industrial autonomy and paving the way for innovations like autonomous vehicles.

The Future is Autonomous: Oxford’s Robots Navigate the Unpredictable

Imagine a future where autonomous robots are invaluable data providers for industrial firms, offering insights and repeated measurements that surpass human capabilities. This is the vision of the Oxford Robotics Institute’s director.

At the AI Summit London, Nick Hawes shared how his team has already begun to realize this future. They’ve deployed autonomous robots like Boston Dynamics’ Spot at locations such as a former nuclear fusion reactor, collecting radiation data over 35 days with minimal human intervention.

The Oxford Robotics Institute is a hub of innovation, with seven distinct research groups tackling everything from dexterous control manipulators to fully AI-driven robots in industrial environments. A staggering 80% of the Institute’s work is AI-related, addressing both fundamental research questions and client needs.

The Institute’s pioneering work in robotics paved the way for the first autonomous cars on the road through Oxbotica, now rebranded as Oxa.

Their current focus? Autonomy. Specifically, deploying robots in industrial settings and reaching places humans can’t. While industrial companies are contemplating autonomy, they generally favor a human-in-the-loop approach, where operators collaborate with robots and can intervene when necessary. The transition to full autonomy won’t happen instantly, as systems need to improve at managing uncertainty.

Hawes quipped, “If the world was fixed and 100% predictable, we’d write a Python script and be done. The reason you need AI on a robot is because it needs to respond to changes.”

He highlighted several autonomous robotic deployments his team has undertaken, including using Boston Dynamics’ quadrupedal robots to patrol industrial plants. These robots were equipped with lidar and advanced 3D mapping technologies, enabling them to navigate an industrial site autonomously and carry mission-specific payloads, such as radiation monitoring devices.

In one deployment, Spot operated autonomously for 35 days at the U.K.’s former fusion reactor site, collecting data on alpha radiation emissions with minimal human involvement. It was programmed to return to its charging unit when its battery was low.
Hawes explained, “The robot had a little script that said, here are the six places I want you to look at and this is what your battery looks like. The robot was then able to plan and optimize for that information to get up every day, walk around the site, gather the information and go back home.”
