SETI and Nvidia Partner for AI-Powered Real-Time Search for Extraterrestrial Signals

Radio astronomers at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute are leveraging AI to pioneer the world’s first real-time search for fast radio bursts (FRBs), high-energy signals from space that could indicate life.

Nvidia, during its AI Summit on Tuesday, announced that SETI researchers are utilizing Nvidia Holoscan, a sensor-processing platform, and Nvidia IGX, an edge-computing solution, to delve deeper into these rare astronomical phenomena.

The SETI Institute operates the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California to search for extraterrestrial intelligence and to monitor transient astronomical events like fast radio bursts.

Traditionally, analyzing space radio signals was a slow, offline process, with data being collected first and then processed later with custom-built software.

Nvidia’s platforms have empowered SETI researchers to build a real-time system for detecting FRBs and other faint signals from space, dramatically accelerating data analysis from the Allen Telescope Array.

This initiative began when Andrew Siemion, SETI chair at the SETI Institute, recognized the potential of early machine learning models for analyzing radio signals over a decade ago.

SETI was already using Nvidia GPUs to enhance algorithms that differentiate signals from background noise. Siemion approached Adam Thompson, Nvidia's senior technical product manager for edge HPC, to create a system capable of real-time detection.

“We wanted to create something that would truly advance our capabilities,” Siemion explained. “We envisioned a streaming solution that would continuously take real-time data from telescopes and feed it directly into GPUs for AI analysis.”

This project united SETI Institute with Breakthrough Listen, another SETI program based at the University of Oxford, which uses GPUs to process data from radio telescopes.

The SETI team built the real-time data reception and inference pipeline with the Holoscan SDK, while a Breakthrough Listen researcher developed and trained an AI model to detect fast radio bursts.

In a recent trial, 28 antennas were pointed at the Crab Nebula, gathering over 90 billion data packets in 15 hours and processing them at nearly 100 Gbps—doubling SETI’s previous capacity.

Siemion noted that the AI system now captures and analyzes all incoming data without discarding any for efficiency, a major leap forward from past methods.

“We’re on the verge of a completely new way of analyzing streaming astronomical data, and the discoveries we’ll make with this will be incredible,” Siemion said.

This technological leap is not confined to astronomy—SETI’s new real-time data analysis pipeline, powered by Nvidia, can be adapted to other industries that require accelerated computing and AI.
