Musk’s xAI Bypasses Oracle: Pioneering a GPU-Driven Grok 3

Oracle Cloud Dismissed as xAI Pursues Its Own Hardware Solution

Hey there,

Elon Musk's xAI startup will no longer use Oracle’s Cloud services, opting to build its own infrastructure to meet its aggressive timelines and hardware needs. xAI, aiming to compete with OpenAI, is investing in a massive supercomputer and plans to release Grok 2 in August, with Grok 3 needing 100,000 Nvidia GPUs for training.

Elon Musk's xAI Ends Oracle Cloud Partnership, Builds Own Supercomputer for AI Training

Elon Musk's xAI startup will not expand its use of Oracle’s Cloud services for future AI training workloads. Talks ended after Oracle admitted it couldn’t match xAI’s timeline demands, according to reports.

Musk confirmed the news on X (Twitter), stating that the startup’s success “depends on being the fastest by far; we must have our own hands on the steering wheel, rather than be a backseat driver.” Previously reliant on Oracle Cloud servers for training its Grok and Grok 1.5 language models, xAI is now building its own training cluster and a massive supercomputer in Memphis to power future efforts.

Set to release Grok 2 in August and work on Grok 3, Musk believes the model needs 100,000 H100 GPUs from Nvidia for effective training. XAI was one of Oracle’s largest cloud service customers, using 16,000 Nvidia GPUs to train its Grok models, but kept increasing hardware demands.

Oracle founder and CTO Larry Ellison said in the company’s Q2 earnings call that xAI “want(s) a lot more GPUs than we gave them,” adding, “We gave them quite a few, but they wanted more, and we're in the process of getting them more.”

XAI’s desire for hardware comes as Musk envisions Grok 3 to be on par with “or beyond” GPT-5, the anticipated next great leap in language models. Valued at $24 billion in just a year, the startup aims to move fast to compete with OpenAI. Musk emphasized on X that “the reason we decided to do the 100k H100 and next major system internally was that our fundamental competitiveness depends on being faster than any other AI company. This is the only way to catch up.”
