Mastercard is revolutionizing fraud detection with generative AI, making compromised bank cards a thing of the past.

In a world where scammers employ a myriad of tools such as spyware, malware, and card skimming to steal bank details, Mastercard stands as a beacon of security. Card skimming alone results in an estimated loss of $1 billion, with criminals brazenly posting stolen payment details online.

Mastercard’s generative AI tool is the knight in shining armor in this battle against fraud. It diligently scans transaction data across billions of customer cards, hunting for fraud patterns based on 40 security and infrastructure criteria. Upon detecting a suspected fraudulent transaction, it swiftly alerts Mastercard, enabling the payment to be halted in mere seconds. It doesn’t stop there; it continues to monitor further attempted transactions to nip any additional fraud in the bud.

Mastercard’s generative AI solution has proven its mettle by doubling the detection rates of compromised cards and accelerating the speed of informing customers about compromised accounts by a staggering 300%. It also significantly reduced false positive reports by 200%.

Johan Gerber, Mastercard’s executive vice president for security and cyber innovation, confidently states, “Fraudsters may have thought they were operating in obscurity, but thanks to our world-leading cyber technology, we can now piece together the jigsaw, enhancing trust for banks, their customers, and the digital ecosystem as a whole.”

Mastercard’s generative AI solution, developed using capabilities acquired through its 2020 acquisition of cybersecurity firm RiskRecon, is a part of Mastercard’s Cyber Secure suite of security solutions. Launched in 2020, Cyber Secure features AI tools designed to prevent account breaches by vigilantly monitoring suspected compromised bank cards and merchant transactions.

Mastercard is also exploring contactless cards designed to safeguard against attacks from quantum computers.

Notably, Visa launched a similar generative AI-powered fraud detection solution in early May. Visa’s VAAI Score Tool detects possible fraudulent payments in an impressive four milliseconds.
