Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has forged partnerships with Dell, Nvidia, and Supermicro to create what is poised to become the world’s largest supercomputer. This ambitious project, announced in early June, aims to provide xAI with a dedicated infrastructure—a “gigafactory of compute”—to fuel its training efforts. By reducing reliance on cloud services from Oracle and other data centers, xAI seeks to accelerate its AI development.

Dell’s involvement was revealed when CEO Michael Dell shared a photo of server racks on X (formerly Twitter), announcing the construction of an “AI factory” as part of the supercomputer’s infrastructure. This factory will offer specialized AI infrastructure services, leveraging liquid-cooled servers and Nvidia’s cutting-edge Blackwell GPUs to handle high-intensity AI workloads.

The AI factory will power Grok, xAI’s rebellious chatbot designed to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Musk confirmed that Dell will assemble half of the supercomputer’s racks, while Supermicro will handle the other half. Supermicro’s involvement was succinctly acknowledged by Musk in a response to another X user, simply stating “SMC” (Super Micro Computer).

Although Supermicro has not officially confirmed its collaboration with xAI, Musk recently disclosed xAI’s plans to acquire approximately 300,000 new Blackwell B200 GPUs from Nvidia next summer. Interestingly, Musk opted not to invest in Nvidia’s current flagship H100 GPUs, citing the rapid pace of AI hardware advancements.

Meanwhile, Nvidia, now the world’s most valuable company, adheres to an annual release schedule, consistently launching updated versions of its Blackwell and Rubin chips.
