Uber Unveils AI Assistant to Drive Electric Vehicle Adoption

Uber has unveiled a series of bold initiatives to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, with one of the most exciting being a groundbreaking AI assistant for drivers.

In a blog post, the ride-hailing giant detailed new updates and features designed to "accelerate electrification and make it easier than ever for drivers, consumers, and merchants to choose a greener path."

This is a key part of Uber’s ambitious goal to become a zero-emissions platform by 2040.

Acknowledging the widespread lack of knowledge about EVs, Uber announced at the GoGet sustainability conference in London its commitment to launching a service aimed at answering public questions about electric vehicles.

As a result, Uber’s driver app will soon include an AI assistant – powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o – offering human-like answers to a wide range of EV-related queries.

Currently in beta testing, the service is expected to go live in early 2025.

Initially focused on providing EV-specific guidance, like charging tips and purchasing advice, the assistant may expand to other topics over time.

A visual on Uber's website showcases how the assistant works, highlighting the benefits of EV adoption and offering sample questions like “Which EVs are most affordable?” and “Where can I find charging stations?” The assistant will also provide localized advice based on the user’s location.

Ultimately, the AI bot will be accessible from the driver app’s home screen and will respond audibly to user queries.

Other notable initiatives aimed at boosting EV uptake include the launch of All-Electric Uber Green, a fully electric extension of Uber Green that allows users to request EVs in over 40 cities worldwide at the same price as UberX.

Additionally, EV Preference will enable users to select an electric vehicle within the app and be matched with one if available. If an EV isn’t nearby, the user will be matched with an UberX.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized at the conference: “We need more affordable EVs, and we need incentives for those driving the most. We all need to step up.”
